- When you first introduce an author state their full name, every other time it is the last name.
- Avoid passive voice "to be" and "to have"
- She/he be specific as to whom who you are talking about by stating the character's name.
- Avoid cliche
- Use language from the prompt
- Always use present tense
- Avoid "I" statements
Writing the Personal Statement
This is a good example of a response to "Prompt #1" of the UC application. Notice how the writer takes a risk. Why would colleges want this student based on the implied strengths coming out in her statement? She currently attends UCB. Here is my statement of purpose (is what it is called when you apply to graduate school). It is different because it is less personal but you'll be able to see that it is focused on a particular topic.
