Class Discussion
Class discussion is imperative in this course. Being prepared to discuss by doing the reading and keeping annotations will make you a more critical reader and participant in our class. Each day we have class discussion as indicated on the calendar you will need to bring annotations and questions for discussing. Each class discussion you will be assigned a role: leader, observer, notetaker or participant. Your grade will depend on your preparation and depth of your involvement in your assigned role. Got it!

Summer Writing Assignment #1: (Due by the 1st week of school)
in summary you will need to choose to read one novel and one play this summer off of the list on the "Summer Reading Assignment" handout.
Summer Writing Assignment #1: (Due by the 1st week of school)
- Complete novel/play review sheets.
- In addition, you will be required to complete a timed writing on the novel you read during the first week of school so you will need to demonstrate your knowledge of the book. To prepare for this timed writing, annotate your text for literary devices and analyze as many themes as possible. You will not be allowed to use any notes or the book during the timed writing. We will share models with you and discuss the structure of your essay during before you are asked to write about the novel.
- Keep a reading journal/dialectical journal for each text (that means the novel and the play). Analyze quotes, figurative language, themes, characters and literary devices employed by the author. Analyze text structure and figurative language, comment on characterization and arising themes/motifs. For plays you may also wish to consider analyzing stage directions, scene sequences, soliloquies/monologues and symbolism. For each text, complete at least 15 entries in your reading journal. See models we have posted online.
